The Atipografia Threshold and Treasure Gallery, designed by AMAA – Collaborative Office for Research and Development, is more than a renovation or exhibition space. It is a meditation on boundaries, perception, and the dialogue between art and architecture. The project’s title—Threshold and Treasure—suggests a duality: the threshold as the space of encounter and transition, and the treasure as that which lies beyond, revealed only through the act of crossing. In this sense, the gallery becomes both path and destination, both container and content, articulating a spatial and philosophical narrative about how we approach art, memory, and the built environment.
The Concept of Threshold
At the heart of the project lies the notion of the threshold—a liminal zone where meaning unfolds. Rather than treating the entrance as a mere point of access, AMAA transforms it into a work of architecture that embodies the identity of the gallery itself. The entrance sequence is conceived as a gradual spatial experience, a ritual of transition that prepares the visitor to engage with the art inside.
This design approach situates the threshold as both an architectural and urban device. Facing a dense and visually chaotic urban context, the gallery responds not by competing with it but by creating an internal world of calm. The passage from exterior to interior thus becomes an act of purification—leaving behind the noise of the city and entering a realm of contemplative stillness. Through material restraint, carefully modulated light, and a controlled progression of spaces, the architects guide visitors into a state of focused attention and spatial awareness.
A Journey of Gradual Revelation
The circulation path is designed to gently lead visitors inward, beginning from the farthest point and unfolding through a sequence of enclosed transitions. Each threshold marks a moment of transformation, a subtle shift in atmosphere, temperature, and light. As one moves deeper into the building, spaces contract and expand rhythmically, heightening the perception of material surfaces and the presence of light as a sculptural element.
This choreographed movement is not merely functional—it is experiential and narrative. The architecture deliberately slows down the visitor’s pace, allowing the mind to detach from the external world. The act of moving through these thresholds becomes a metaphor for entering the space of art itself—a psychological journey from the ordinary to the extraordinary, from noise to silence, from the public to the private.
Spatial Composition and Material Clarity
AMAA’s intervention engages with the site’s complex historical stratification, composed of a Liberty-style building and later twentieth-century additions. Rather than erasing the traces of time, the architects embrace them, revealing layers of history through subtle contrasts and careful articulation of materials.
Concrete, steel, and wood are used sparingly but deliberately, each expressing its inherent texture and weight. Surfaces are left raw and tactile, allowing imperfections and aging to become part of the architectural narrative. The palette of muted tones—soft greys, pale whites, and warm earthen hues—creates a sense of continuity between interior and exterior, between old and new.
Natural light enters the gallery through precisely calibrated openings, grazing the walls and illuminating the artworks with a quiet intensity. The result is a space that feels timeless yet rooted—a fusion of memory and modernity.
The Outdoor Stair as a Temporal Marker
A defining element of the project is the outdoor stair, which establishes a clear yet poetic separation between the Liberty building and the twentieth-century addition. Conceptually, it exposes the passage of time, making visible the building’s evolution through history.
The stair acts as a hinge between different eras and spatial logics. Its material presence—sturdy yet delicate—echoes the project’s broader theme of continuity through distinction. By “detaching” the structures, AMAA allows each to retain its identity while contributing to a cohesive whole. The stair becomes an architectural threshold in itself, mediating between past and present, interior and exterior, memory and transformation.
Architecture as Curatorial Framework
Within the gallery, architecture and art engage in a reciprocal dialogue. Rather than serving as a neutral backdrop, the architecture actively frames the artworks, guiding perception without imposing itself. Spaces are defined by proportion and rhythm rather than ornament or spectacle. The column-beam structures, exposed in certain areas, recall the discipline of construction and the poetics of support—an honest expression of the building’s anatomy.
The galleries vary in scale and character, accommodating different forms of artistic expression while maintaining a coherent spatial logic. Openings between rooms are carefully aligned, establishing visual connections that extend beyond physical boundaries. This interplay of thresholds creates a continuous visual field, reinforcing the curatorial concept that the journey through space is inseparable from the experience of art itself.
A Dialogue Between Urban and Intimate Scales
Externally, the gallery’s façade maintains a quiet presence within the urban fabric, defined by proportion rather than ornamentation. The design neither mimics historical language nor denies it; instead, it interprets tradition through restraint. The boundary between the street and the interior world is softened, inviting curiosity without overt display.
