Nestled in the highlands of Khanong Phra, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khanong Phra Campsite spans 100 rai (16 hectares) of diverse terrain, including sloping ridges and stretches of flatland. The development offers visitors a serene retreat into nature, blending recreational infrastructure with comfort, sustainability, and a sensitivity to the existing landscape. The project began with land reshaping and infrastructure establishment, including three large water reservoirs for internal use and dedicated water and power stations, laying the groundwork for a self-sufficient, functional, and ecologically responsible site.

The design prioritizes visual and physical connectivity, allowing visitors to experience the landscape in a gradual and immersive sequence. Paths and roads are carefully aligned with natural contours, guiding exploration while preserving the integrity of the terrain.

Masterplan and Spatial Sequence

The masterplan organizes the site into a clear, navigable hierarchy of spaces, connecting key architectural and activity zones. Visitors begin their journey at the Information Center, complemented by staff accommodations near the entrance for ease of management. Nearby, the Goose House sits beside a pond, creating an intimate encounter with local wildlife in an open, accessible setting.

Moving deeper into the property, the agricultural greenhouse is positioned adjacent to the utility zone. Its staggered roof heights are oriented to optimize sunlight and wind exposure, accommodating diverse plant species—from low-lying crops to climbing vines and small trees—according to their light and microclimate needs. This greenhouse not only supplies fresh produce to the onsite canteen but also serves nearby restaurants, reinforcing the site’s integration with local food systems and sustainability goals.

Rest and Retreat Zones

Ascending the terrain, visitors encounter Shelter 01, a semi-outdoor resting space constructed from lightweight, adaptable materials such as shading nets. Elevated above the greenhouse, this shelter offers a tranquil retreat with panoramic views, allowing guests to pause and engage with the landscape from a contemplative perspective.

To address the highland’s strong mountain winds, the design incorporates stone walls sourced locally, providing structural support and shielding delicate fabric roofs. These walls also harmonize with the natural surroundings, blending architecture with the topography. Behind these protective barriers, a canteen serves both overnight visitors and day guests, supported by strategically placed restrooms within the activity zone.

Overnight Accommodation and Scenic Experience

At the highest point of the site, the mountaintop campground unfolds, offering six private overnight units. Each unit is designed for comfort and convenience, equipped with toilets, pantries, dedicated tent spaces, and car parking. This elevated position not only enhances privacy but also provides guests with uninterrupted views of the surrounding valley.

A panoramic viewing deck crowns the experience, offering sweeping vistas over the Khanong Phra valley. Positioned as the final destination of the site’s carefully orchestrated spatial journey, the deck embodies the campsite’s central ethos: immersion in nature, serenity, and a deep connection to the landscape.

Materials and Sustainability

Material choices reflect both durability and ecological sensitivity. Locally sourced stone, lightweight shading fabrics, and natural timber were selected to minimize environmental impact while maintaining harmony with the highland terrain. The combination of robust, low-maintenance materials with lightweight, adaptable structures enables resilience against the elements while maintaining an aesthetic that feels authentic and integrated with the natural surroundings.

Visitor Experience

Khanong Phra Campsite is more than a recreational facility—it is a narrative of engagement with nature. The sequence of experiences—from arrival and observation of wildlife, through immersive agricultural and activity zones, to elevated rest areas and mountaintop accommodation—encourages visitors to move deliberately, observe attentively, and connect deeply with the landscape. By combining careful planning, sustainable practices, and thoughtful design interventions, the campsite creates a holistic, immersive journey, blending leisure, exploration, and ecological awareness.
