São Paulo, 2024 – Eduardo and Clarissa, a couple of lawyers from Brasília, moved to São Paulo for work and decided to invest in personalizing their new home. For their new home, a 200m² apartment in Vila Olímpia, they wanted to bring architectural references from their hometown. The project was developed by architects Karen Evangelisti and Marcos Mendes, while they were partners at Iná Arquitetura (today, they are in charge of Goiva Arquitetura).

Inspired by the work of Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, the renovation aimed to incorporate emblematic elements of modernist architecture in Brasilia. Among the main highlights is the slatted wood panel in the living room, an allusion to the shapes and textures of Niemeyer’s buildings, and the panel inspired by the works of Athos Bulcão, whose abstract and geometric art is a striking feature of the federal capital.

With no major structural changes to the apartment, the project focused on the choice of materials and the execution of the missing details to complete the property. Wood appears frequently in the finishes, creating a cozy and sophisticated atmosphere.

The furniture, selected in partnership with the clients, reinforces the modernist aesthetic with signature design pieces. Among them, armchairs by Brazilian designer Zanine Caldas complement the ambience, mixing vintage and contemporary.

In the living and dining areas, the integration sought to promote fluidity and conviviality between the rooms, while large floor-to-ceiling windows let in generous amounts of natural light and offer a connection with the urban landscape.

“This atmosphere becomes even more special at night, when the city lights envelop the space. It’s as if it creates a contrast between the serenity of the interior and the energy of the urban landscape,” comments Marcos.

In the couple’s suite, minimalist furniture and custom woodwork, including the headboard and closet, ensure functionality and elegance.

“The result is a space that reflects the couple’s personality, combining the modernity of the São Paulo capital with the emotional memories of Brasília,” says Karen.
